Common Country: The Perceived Urbanization of
Queer Identity
Beginning in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, many Queer people migrated from rural areas to join epicenters of Queer community in urban centers. Documentation of LGBTQ+ history has been largely reliant on this group, creating an interpretation of the Queer identity that is solely urbanized. This has led to exclusion of rural Queers from mainstream history and continues to be an instigator of perceived isolation. Common Country calls attention to the rural Queer America that has always existed.
Artists exhibited in the show: Lev Sibilla, Jordan Ramsey Ismaiel, Allen Rogers, W June Carpenter, Chad Troyer and Konya. Curated by Leon Lister.
